As a Black woman educator…

how many times have you felt powerless and discouraged to express yourself or provide honest feedback for fear of retaliation?

How often have you been overlooked for a leadership role though your expertise more than qualified you? Who can you turn to when you need genuine support and accountability?

Here are the facts

Black women educators like you represent less than 10 percent of the teaching workforce, which means:

You lack a like-minded community where you are supported & encouraged to be nothing more than your authentic self.

Black Girls Teach Icons (7).png

Your school doesn’t have the proper knowledge or the willingness to develop your unique needs as a minority.

You are often underutilized in your role, even though your tenure, reputation, and skills are unmatched.

You are replaceable in schools that fail to prioritize the retention of Black educators.

You have to adapt to a system that has historically taught non-black educators to quell black voices, upholding a white supremacist culture.

who we are

That’s why black girls teach exists.

We offer Black women educators a supportive environment to openly grow, collaborate, and unite as we demand change in education. Through our powerful platform, we empower educators with the knowledge and tools to find their voices, advocate for change, and position themselves as the experts needed in education. But we are not alone in our fight. Thanks to the trusted allies who joined our cause, we can continue the work to center black women’s voices.

Over the years, we have amassed a solid network of Black women educators across social media, including experts, influencers, and leaders. Whether in the wellness, entrepreneurship, branding, communication, or educational field, each supporter is accessible and willing to serve as a resource for our cause. Black Girls Teach is a one-of-a-kind community that addresses issues and concerns that matter to Black women in education.

Hi, I’m Deidra.

I’m an unapologetically outspoken veteran educator that wants nothing more than to see my fellow Black women educators WIN. And to win, we must demand access to the same opportunities and privileges as our white counterparts. Over the years, I’ve endured what many Black women educators continue to face today - lack of representation and support. I’ve worked in challenging schools with ill-equipped leadership and have had to “make it work” without the necessary resources and mentorship to thrive in my role. Everything I speak on, I have witnessed or survived. I am YOU.

I birthed Black Girls Teach out of my desire to build a community where Black women educators can come together to discuss topics, solicit advice, share best practices, and connect honestly and freely. I stopped waiting around to be acknowledged by my school and decided to invest in myself and other Black women educators through my platform. The raw and sometimes uncomfortable conversations allow people - especially non-Black educators and leaders - to see and hear the unique perspectives of Black women working in education.

My goal is to continue to disrupt the complacent, whitewashed mindsets and speak up about inequity in education. I encourage all socially conscious, anti-racist educators to stand in their truth and use their voices to shed light on the disparities in education, too. We need all hands on deck.

Black Girls Teach is more than a platform; it’s a movement.

Imagine if the current state of education changed worldwide and became what we’ve been fighting so hard to create. Schools would hire more Black women educators and regularly invest in the infrastructure to retain them. Teacher morale would increase, and students, especially those of color, would have the support needed from teachers of color. Ultimately, the quality of education would improve. And when the educational system treats Black women educators like the assets they are, they can rise into leadership roles and cultivate an environment that dismantles the choke of racial and gender inequality. We’ve got work to do.
